THE FUTURE OF FREERIDING: LIGHTWEIGHT, VERSATILE, ELECTRONIC
Freeriding backpack with electronic LiTRIC avalanche airbag system
Highlights
- AVABAG LiTRIC airbag system: electronic, lightweight and reliable
- Back and features specially tailored to freeriding
- Versatile: compatible with all AVABAG LiTRIC FREERIDE and TOUR Zip attachments
The future of freeriding: The AVABAG LiTRIC FREERIDE 28 is an avalanche airbag backpack that has been specially designed for descents. From powder days near the piste to multi-day freeriding trips: Just one BASE can be used to attach various sizes of AVABAG LiTRIC FREERIDE and TOUR Zip attachments, each tailored to their intended use. The Zip is designed in such a way that, when combined, the base and the various packs merge to form a single unit.
The BASE of the AVABAG LiTRIC FREERIDE 28 comprises a back element and airbag system and thanks to the CLASP BACK SYSTEM – with soft back pads, wide, flexible hip belt and soft shoulder straps – sits extremely snugly against the back while allowing complete freedom of movement. It is compatible with the CLASP SPINE PROTECTOR (available separately).
And all of the stowaway bag’s features are exactly tailored to freeriding: Features such as ski, snowboard and ice axe fastenings as well as a helmet holder and quick access to the main compartment leave nothing to be desired. Emergency equipment can be stowed in a separate safety compartment.
LiTRIC, the electronic airbag system, is lightweight, reliable and easy to use. The electronic system can be fully charged in approx. 25 minutes via USB-C and activation can be tested any number of times at no additional cost. The lack of a cartridge means: more space, no weighing necessary, no cartridge disposal, no travel limitations. The design is clever down to the smallest detail, supercapacitors are used instead of cartridges and the airbag is ultra-lightweight – making the system one of the lightest on the market. And the system is especially easy to use. From charging and the LED display, to the activation handle, to airbag packing and the leg loop: LiTRIC AVABAGS are absolutely intuitive to operate. One charge enables at least two activations. When switched ON its operation time is approx.60 hours, which allows for multi-day tours with no need for recharging. Its operating temperature ranges from -30°C to +45°C.
All products in the AVABAG LiTRIC FREERIDE line are climate-neutral and PFC-free.
Registering the system on https://www.ortovox.com/service-hub will extend its warranty from two to five years.
Caution! Keep the polybag used for product packaging away from babies and children. This bag is not a toy! Choking hazard!

Overall a great backpack. Notable features for me are the convenient electronic airbag system, no issues with it so far traveling by plane, the materials are a major upgrade to my previous Ortovox avabag, the zip-on system is convenient, the airbag zipper doesn't rip open anymore on the slopes, and the hip belt with clip is much more convenient than the prior belt using velcro. Two remarks: (1) the backpack seems more designed for skiers than for snowboarders. I don't find the straps convenient for bootpacking so put my board between the backpack and my back, and (2) I additionally purchased the zip-on 40L for touring but it doesn't come with a 2nd airbag deflating tool. Unfortunately, the store where I purchased the backpack was unable to provide a 2nd tool, and Ortovox never replied to multiple messages to provide or sell a spare deflating tool. It's a small item and easy to forget when switching the zip-on.

I was using this backpack for around 50-60 days last season (mostly resort freeride and 5-10% time touring) I like that Litric system is more compact in the backpack (compared to other electric solutions) and I have more space for other stuff and sometimes camera gear. I can fit into it more VS 30-32L backpacks from others. Litric handle also feels better designed with "turn" mechanism instead of sleeve, when such sleeves quickly got holes, based on my experience with other systems. Comfortable to carry skis, even long ones (190sm). I can suggest to improve fabric between avalanche and main pockets, in my case this is already almost worn through, where there is top of probe and shovel's hand. Good that I can get new "bag only" and replace it, but not good that I would need to do it. Also, some minor improvements to ergonomics of back (to fit better for spine and back) itself would be nice to see in future. I can suggest to try how it fits exactly you. And would like hip pocked on one side to be added. As some summary, this backpack fits my needs bit better then competitors, especially because of space utilization.
